NYC Infill Project

Project Overview
With the historical context of the site in mind, the project resurrects the historical botanical gardens that existed in the district in the 18th century when the island of Manhattan was mostly farmland. An indoor garden in New YorkCity becomes a retreat during the winter providing therapeutic benefits of greenery even during the colder months. Through this research, we developed a community centered around a botanical garden that offers public green space to NOHO, connecting the residents of the apartments with the city. We started by orienting the garden at the street corner to offers the public a verdant intersection amidst the urban landscape. Also, the garden’s three levels are strategically designed to create an experiential environment for different perspectives and optimal sunlight. Surrounding the gardens, there are many apartments that attracts residence and follows New York’s mixed-use building code. Using the rhythm of buildings on Great Jones St and Lafayette St, we inform the organization of the project and a visual connection to the site. TheNOHO Retreat appreciates the district and its history by combining recreation and residence to foster a more vibrant and interactive neighborhood.
